CORRESPONDENCE.

We we not responsible {or the statement* or opinions oi correspondents. OUR f^RARyr ~ ~~ TO THE EDITOR OF THE MANAWATU HEBALD. Sib,— The prevailing depression forms a dark side to our town life. A brightening influence in our midst is the existence of a fairly-equipped Public Library, where the student, tHe weary meohanic or the out of a job-man may readily post himself up on current topics, and keep in touch with the • life of the day. Something, however, is ** wrong about the way the various papers are sometimes' missing, not casually but often. Take an instance last week. As a district minister I am equally interested in the town life of both Foxtonand Shannon, and am always glad to scan the pages of the Herald and Fanner. Now the Farmer arrives on Thursday. It has by no means lain its appointed time on the table, for on enquiry I learnt it disappeared soon after its arrival. This is disappointing and manifestly unfair. Who hath done this and why ? I remember on my voyage out to New Zealand a tiny tri-weekly paper was published on board. One day it contained anarticle that ' touched ' a passenger. In Cxbtste.and wrath he seized the first opportunity to cut up and mangle the little tttnig. This naturally drew upon him the strong d'sfavour of all. Can it be that somebody was 'touched' on Thursday l*at ? I tee eince that the paper referred too contained some notes from the biting

pen of the mysterious Foxton scribe, who is nevertheless a clever correspondent. Whoever the purloine* was such conduct is a sure indicatidn d! a digmal . lack of con« Bcieritiojisnesg and public spirit; As detec= tion is difficult, an dpeii letter td the guilty one, with the modest request that He Inspect the rights of his fellows, and hereafter ' read and leave' should not be out of place. In the spirit of public rights, I am &c, S» Babhett. Foxton, 24th September,
