A Lady's Letter
» Wellington, July 13, 1895. The • At Home ' at Government House on Thursday was not as large as usual, but was, never the-less, very enjoyable. The Earl and Countess of Glasgow received together. Lady Glasgow wore a dark blue silk gown brocaded with ecru lace. Lady Augusta Boyle wore a pale fawn gown trimmed with braid, Lidy Alice, pale grey trimmed with narrow bands of dark red velvet, Lady Dorothy, pretty brown frock. Miss Crase, who is still staying at Government House, looked very well in a dark skirt and pretty white silk blouse, brocaded with pink. Among the guests were Bishop and Mrs Wallis who wore a smoke grey gown trimmed with white silk and lace, pretty hat with white wing 3; Mrs C. Johnston handsome black gown and velvet cape eoru lace bonnet with red berries ; Mrs Duncan black silk gown, short velvet cape trimmed with jet, gold and black bonnet ; Mr and Mrs Acland, Dr Mrs and Miss Grace, Mrs and the Misses W. Johnston, Mrs and Miss Friend, Mrs Alec. Crawford who wore a pretty brown and black gown, small bonnet with velvet rosettes ; Col. and Mrs Fox, the latter wearing dark peacock green trimmed with yellow, yellow straw bonnet with green and white tulle rosettes ; Mr and Mrs CookeDaniels, Mrs and the Misses Gore and several others. A very enjoyable afternoon tea was given by Mrs CookeDaniels last Wednesday. Mrs Daniels has also issued invitations for a ball on the 19th. At Lady Stout's afternoon tea on Saturday there were a very large number of guests, including several members of parliamen t. Lady Stou t received in a neat black gown with moire silk revers edged with grey silk and jet. Sir Robert Stout made an excellent host and was indefatigable in looking after his guest's wants. Among those present I noticed Bishop and Mrs Wallis ; Mrs Seddon, who wore a black gown and bonnet. Mrs Ward looked very well in a pretty brown gown and short circular cape, yellow straw bonnet trimmed with bright pink flowers and jet ornaments. Mr and Mrs Reeves, the latter wearing dark green slightly trimmed with yellow ; Mrs Richmond, Mr and Mrs G. Huthison, Mr and Miss Duthie, Miss McKenzie, Mr and Mrs E. J. Reid, etc. The Hunt Club races took place this atternoon at the Hutt Park course, and were fairly well attended. Lord and Lady Glasgow were present and were entertained at lnnch by the President of the Club, Mr EL D. Bell and Mr J. Coates. I was very glad to see that Lady Augusta Boyle was well enough to attend, she remained in the carriage, and the horses being taken out it was dragged on to the lawn in front of the grandstand. Lady Glasgow wore a handsome gown of camels hair cloth of dark and light brown stripes, moss green velvet cape trimmed with fur and jet, and pretty green bonuet with osprey. Miss Grace, light grey tailor made go wo, large black velvet hat with feathers and voilets ; Capyt. Campbell-Preston, Mr Clayton and Mr Gathorne-Hardy were in attendance. Others I noticed were Mr and Mrs H. D. Crawford, the latter was wearing a pretty brown skirt and jacket, yellow silk folded vest, small brown hat with yellow osprey ; Mr and Mrs Aleo. Crawford, the latter in a stylish brown crepon . gown trimmed with black satin, small black hat with pink roses ; Miss Bennett (Balls) black serge ikirt, seal skin jacket, small black hat with bunches of violets ; Mrs H. D. Bell, brown tailor made costume and small violet bonnet; Miss Pearce, black serge costume, fur boa and bonnet of fur and velvet ; Col. and Mrs Fox, the latter wearing a grey tweed gown large black hat with feathers ; Capt. and Miss Russell, Mr J. G. Wilson and others.At the christening of Mr and Mri Cook-Daniel's little daughter, Lady Glasgow stood as one sponsor and Mrs (Dr) Newman as another. The Ceremony which was performed by Bishop Wallia took place in St. Paul's Church, and among those witnessing were, Mr and Mrs Daniels and the latter's brother Mr Tamer, Lady Glasgow, the Ladies Alice and Dorothy Boyle, Dr and Mrs Newman, Mrs and Miss Williamg and Miss Crace. I hear that Mrs J. G. Wilson and her daughters are coming to Wellington for a part of the session. Mrs Wilson is a general favourite here, so I hope this news is true. SIGNA.
