Mr Uhancey Uepew declares tnat the Republicans will at the next election offer to revise the tariff on the lines of ex-President Harrison's scheme, thus rejecting the McKinley tariff, while securing increased protection and restoring the duties on wool, A workmen's conspiracy against the Czar has been discovered in St. Petersburg, alld fflany persons suspected of complicity have been taken into custody. In a conflict between Albanian gendarmes and peasants of Crete, the latter killed an officer and imprisoned a number of men. Troops were sent to secure the release of the prisoners, and in the engagement which ensued 20 were killed on each side. The Italian Chamber of Deputies, by a majority of 200, ignored the Vatican's request, and declared that the anniversary of the freedom of Rome shall be celebrated as a national holiday. Seven hundred Chinese attacked the Japanese garrison at Heinou, Formosa, but were repulsed after a desperate conflict with the loss of 200 killed and many imprisoned. The Japanese loss numbered 14.
