v ■ 2*j£ The majority of those engaged for *"' the past two years as a Royal Commission in England to consider the question of systematic relief for the aged poor, report that they cannot declare in favour of a scheme for State pensions owing to financial and economic reasons, and farther that the statement of aged labourers generally that their only prospect is,the workhouse is erroneous. A Lord Brassey is of opinion tnat wider relief should be extended to** the poor. ■■■■■-: 5*3 The report of the Aged Poor Com* rnissioners states that to adopt State" pensions would involve a continuous charge of £2,000,000 for 40 years prior to its becoming effective, and then would not reaoh the thriftless.
