The Cheap Money Scheme.
<» The Sydney Morning Herald says the Board appointed under the Government Advances to Settlers' Act in New Zealand is finding no difficulty in lending money to settlers, and no one apprehended it would. There are doubts, however, respect- \ ing the repayment. The money the 1 Government is lending of any kind, whether of seed and wheat to \ farmers, of land to selectors, or advances to corporations, must be \ hedged around very strictly, or the ! State will get the worst of the 1 business. In this colony the State 1 never got back all the seed and wheat advances made. There have b been attempts made to repudiate the j full claims on free selections, and at ; present there are demands for assistance to selectors, while town cor- . porations have tried to free themselves of their responsibilities under the Government loans for water 1 supply purposes. What is wanted is not any extension of the Government lending to any class, but the contraction of it ; then our creditors will feel safer, and we will be prepared to renew our loans when time comes on more moderate terms. Burning the candle at both ends can no more be done by the Government than by an individual.
