Accident on a Switchback Railway.
A shocking accident happenend at Chrisfcchurch on the Switchback Railway on Saturday night. r lhe railway had only been opened on Thursday, and appeared to work smoothly till the time of the accident. It appears that the automatic switch failed to act, and allowed an empty car to run on to the line, on which a car full of people was running.
Both vehicles were smashed to atoms, and four occupants so seriously injured that they had to be taken to the hospital.
These are : — Beatrice Thompson, a young woman, with a compound comminuted fracture of the left leg, and a comminuted fracture of the right leg ; Morris Williams, John Pearson and Ernest Whifctington, three youths, with a broken leg each.
The other occupants escaped with minor injuries— Press Association.
