Fire on the s.s. Neptune.
: ■» On Saturday afternoon the b.s. Neptune took in a cargo of wool and flax and the hatches were closed late in the evening. At 10.80 aa the captain was taking his ease in the cabin he noticed some smoke about and going on " deck discovered more smoke issuing from the hatches. The alarm was given and on th« hatches being lifted some of the flax broke out into flames. These were promptly got oat and dropped overboard, and a few other bates, were smothered on deck.: The whole cargo was discharged, but we are glad to say the damage altogether was very slight resulting in about five bales of flax being destroyed. It is presumed, as flax does not get on fire spontaneously, • that during the loading some visitor's pipe must have dropped some ashes which, in time, set fire to. the. flax;
That there was a good deal 'of smoke in the hold was evidenced by the finding of some dozen of dead rats, smothered by the smoke. The remainder of the cargo was re-shipped yesterday and the steamer left for Wellington.
