A Competition of Carriages Without Horses.

*"♦*

A singular competition has lately been instituted by a Paris paper with the object of discovering the best kind of carriages to be propelled without horses. The great essential is to apply to a wheeled vehicle some means of propulsion which shall be without danger, easy to manage, and not too dear. Forty-six inventors are taking part in the competition. All the vehicles which pass the preliminary trials will be despatched to Rouen by road with the object of thoroughly testing their merits. Five prizes ranging from oOOOfr. to oOOfr. are offered. A practical locomotive carriage would certainly be a priceless boon in the congested streets of great cities like London and Paris, and would, moreover, spare us the sight of a good deal of the suffering now inflicted on horses.
