Awahuri Bridge.
The conference of representatives of the local bodies interested in the proposed reconstruction of the Awahuri Bridge was held on Tuesday afternoon in Palmerston. ~
Three proposals were considered by the conference. One was to erect an entirely new bridge at a cost of upwards of £6000 ; the second and the cheapest was to <3dntinue the present structure, in the same style, for the requisite 400 ft at a cesi*o
of something like £2000; and the third was to erect a truss bridge, consisting of five 80ft spans, to connect with the present structure,, the decking of which w0u1d, ... in^ consequence, have to be raised 2ft." Crs Cohen, Luxfof^T O'Boimell, and Warden Buick spoke^in .feyo&fbfe erecting a new bridge,; 'whire^C^ Ransom was opposed to. the incmjr^ ing of such a large expenditure, which would burden the ratepayers with additional taxation for years to come. "
The Mayor said the Borough Council representatives were in favor of erecting a truss bridge, with '80ft spans, to connect with the old bridge, the decking of whjch "^quJST be required to be raised two feet -kt.* cost of about £200. They would' not, however, oppose the erection ;*>!' a new structure if the other representatives wished it.
