The Racing Conference.
Mr Maginnifcy suggested ihat; ihe Conference pass a resolution for |he establishment of a New Jockey Club ; but the Pfllsident ruled that he could not; accept'- a motion on the subject • without notice.
It was manifest, however, that a large majority of the Conference tyre in favour of a New Zealand J.£clsy Club to deal with all matto'rs affecting the principles on whioh racing laws should be based.
Sir R. Stout's Gaming £ilK>«S} then considered clause by cHrfHte; and was agreed to, with a few unimportant amendments.
A long discussion ensued regard- 1 ing the limiting of totalisator licenses by one-third, and as to the 'regulations to be drawn on the subject. - Eventually it was resolved that*' the representatives okeagji metropolitan 4istr&t should jyrjng up a scheme to be submitted to the Cpgference showing how the reduction would be made in each district. A resolution proposed by Dr Newman reobmmendmg that the reduction of totalisator permits should be proportionately the lame for racing and trotting clubs was unarii* mously agreed to.
It was resolved that th« y#«
1892-98 shall be the basis in each metropolitan district for the reduction of the number of licenses to 138.
Mr J. Maginnity moved, "That this Conference is of opinion that the establishment of a New Zealand Jockey Club in the near future will be absolutely necessary, in consequence of the' legislation referring to the gaming law 3of the Colony, ttnd Remits the question to the consideration of the various racing clubs throughout the Colony." In the absence of Mr McLean, Mr G. W. Bell said he was requested to record the opposition of the metropolitan and country clubs of Otago. The motion was carried, the Otago representative dissenting. The following sub-committee was appointed to draw up a circular pointing out to the various clubs the reasons for the establishment of a New Zealand Joc'tey Club:— Captain Russell, Dr Newman, Hons. J. D. Ormond and G. McLean, and Messrs H. D. Bell, J. G. Wilson, L. Walker and Maginnity. The following condition was added to rule 167 a : — When an application for a lioense is refused, notice of such refusal shall be immediately forwarded to all the other metropolitan olubs.— N.Z.
