« Abraham & Williams' Stock Report. On Thursday, at Palmerston, we held our annual ewe fair. The entry consisted of IG,OOO sheep, divided into 69 different lots, on account of 50 separate owners. The greater portion of the stock had the merit of being young, sound and service able. At first a few pens were passed in unsold, but soon business commenced in earnest, and prices improved as the sale progressed. About half-way through Mrs Willis' 6 and 8-tooth Eomney ewes, which Were a choice lot of well-bred sheep, commanded the eager attention of * buyers ! these quickly ran up to 22s (3d, falling ultimately to the bid of Mr H. HammondProm then a most vigorous tone existed throughout, and all sorts and conditions readily found.. purchasers.. Of the whole entry, only two lots remained on owners' hands and for these good figures were offered. Commenting upon the state of the trade as evidenced by. this sale, we fonnd suitable sheep in steady demand, and though there were purchasers for all sorts, yet the breeder and grazier proved himself in his selection to be carefully guided by the ruling prices of fat stock in this district, upon this calculation put on all sorts respectively, the stamp of standard values in their different degrees of merit, class and condition. In our opinion, therefore, we consider the sheep trade of to-day based upon the sound business lines already pointed out and kept within these bounds, together with a favourable season fov hoggets and sheep geperally, gives to those engaged in this important industry a strong position to hold out against the difficulties occasioned by the tightness of the money market, temporary, we trust, exijsting at the present time, howover, throughout, the. length and breadth of the Colony, and the financial and trading world in generoL- ;
