Artesian Well.
m : The following a-r<.curd of the beds passed throngh in sinking the artesian well on Mr Wjllfl©ok'B; properly At Awahuri : — 4 feet of goil and clay ; 4ft to 30ft, shingle ; 30ft to 40ft, blue olay ; 40ft to 60ft, shingle ; 60ft to 12t9ft, shingle and clay, in alternate layers-?-: 129 ft to 132 ft, sand ; 132 ft to 134 ft, peat ;" 134 ft to 137 ft, clay; ,137 to -* 158, shingle ; 158 ft to 164 ft, sand ; 164 ft ' '*• to 178 ft, olay and sand; 178 ft to 216 ft, olay; 216 ft to 275 ft, Band and olay in alternate beds ; 275 ft to 276, peat; 276 ft to 841 ft, clay ; 341 ft to 372 ft. sand. The Sloes are down 333 feet and are still b->ing riven. The last 3lft of sand con' i*n > watei*- which rises to within five feet of *he surface, but it is a very thin bed of shingle at a depth of 850 feet which carries tha- most water. Mr Smith, who has obarge of the boring, states that a good flow oan be obtained from that bed. The land has been levelled between the well and Mr Wilcock's dwelling house, and it was found that the house stands on ground nine feet lower than the well, therefore, if the water rises no higher , r a flow can be obtained by Ajneana of' syphon pipes or by outtirig a -trench. Another means of making the water available for the cattle would* be to excavate a tank or pond near the well to a depth of seven feet, when.it would always . contain a supply of water two feet' deep. It will thus be seen that Mr "\Vilcocks has now ' obtained a valuable water supply, should tht^ operations not turn out still more suqceßS*HJLr-^ dvocate.
