The Election.
The result of the polling on Thursday was just what was expected. Mr Williams deserved to head the poll for he has done the state good service in the past, and, though not always right, has very seldom been far out. Mr A hern, another old Councillor, decided not to allow the burgesses to appraise him, and perhaps wisely so, as though a constant attendant at Council meetings, he did little to forward the advancement of the town. We are rather surprised at Ml- Htansell being defeated as he has been a very useful member of the Council and certainly conducted himself in the most pleasing manner. He interested himself in the roads to the advantage of those using them. We do not think we are far wrong in placing his defeat, not so much for his actions as a Councillor, as to his action in another public matter lately. If this is so one more Councillor will be missing from the meetings when his term of office expires. We are very pleased to welcome Mr Jenks back to the Council table. He was always a quiet, painstaking and shrewd member, and his advice will now bo very acceptable. Mr Hamor is to be congratulate d on his return and he ought to make a good ivpres ?n ! Ati vo. The rlefen I- of Mr Aid ridge is not surprising a? he Ims not previously taken any interest in public questions, though w« hope wo will in ths future, and hi?? opinions were therefore unknown to the electors.
The remit of iha election i-i so far satisfactory as it will secure soma decided action being taken about, the wafer supply, as we are aware that the three gentlemen returned are against any more ol the ordinary revenue being sunk in the" 'artesian
well.
