English Strikes.

It is reported that a serious conflict has taken place between the strikers and the workers at Dowlais, a great iron centre, near Merthyr Tydvil, and that 10,000 men were engaged in it. Special trains, filled with soldiers, are being hurried down to Wales. Busine33 is stopped in the disturbed districts. Steam coal has risen to 80s per ton. Stones were placed on the Bhondda railway, but were discovered in time to prevent a disaster. The strikers at Dowlais, principally with staves, attacked the men at work. The Biot Act was read, and the military were called out. The soldiers put an end to the riot, but not till many were inj tired. Batteries of artillery occupy the public buildings. The employers have issued a manifesto stating that unless the men return and adhere to the scale fixed they will insist on penalties. Mr W. Abraham, a miners' representative in the House of Commons, has appealed to the strikers to return. The Welsh strikers pillaged the bakeries at Ferndale. The police charged the rioters at Pontypridd several times, and many of the former were injured. The miners in Ebbw Vale, Monmouthshire, are working on sliding scales. Those in the neighbouring valleys desire to imitate this course. The presence of the military and the energy of the Magistrates prevented the proposed attaok on the workers at Ebbw Vale yesterday. A number of colleries in South Wales have resumed work under protection of the troops.
