HOUSE OP BEPRESENTATIVES. Tuesday, August 15. The Speaker took the chair at 2.30 p.m. The following Bills were read a first time : — Parliamentary Acts Printing Bill ; Mining Companies Act Amendment Bill, and the Representation Acts Amendment Bill No. 2. Mr Cadman was appointed a member of the Native Affairs Committee, and Mr McGowan a member of the Goldfields Committee. The Minister of Lands moved the second reading of the Cheviot Estate Disposition Bill. After a debate the second reading was agreed to on the voices, and the Bill was referred to the Waste Lands Committee. The Hon. W Rolleston urged that the Public Works Statement should be brought down at an early date, before the estimates were fully dealt with. I The Premier complained that there were never so much talking in Parliament as at the present time. It was impossible to get through the business of the country expediMously if time was to be lost in that way.
As to the Public Works Statement, the Opposition must recognise that that Statement could not be framed until the Government were sure of their taxation proposals. The Government intended to readjust the arrangement of subsidies to local -^ bodiesi ' < The House went into Committee of Supply for the consideration of the estimates. Some items were passed and th3n progress was reported, and the House adjourned at B\3o a.m.
