The riots in Bombay were caused by the action of the Mahometans. Incensed at the noisiness of a Hindoo festival, they stormed a temple, and the religious discord between the two sects at once flamed into bitter strife. All traffic is now suspended. The old bitterness between Hindoos and Mahomet-ins has been intensified by this outbreak-. The troops were obliged to fire upon and charge the rioter?. Collisions were frequent in several parts of the city. About 800 armed policeman and railway hands are assisting the troops. Lord Harris returns immediately. Two thousand of those engaging in the Hindoo-Mahometan riots have been arrested. Fifty of the rioters have been killed, and the hospitals aro full to overflowing with wounded. The burial parties were attacked by the rioters, and the services of the military are called into requisition to protect them. Further reinforcements have arrived. The native journals urge the people to remain calm. The Pope, in an encyclical to the French electors, favours upholding the Republic, as no return to monarchy is now possible. With the exception of the mosques and temples, very little damage has been done in Bombay by the rioters. Lord Harris expects the riots to continue, but does not anticipate any serious danger. The arrival of reinforcements is i resulting in order being restored, and the shops are opening again, and matters are quieting down.
