Death of the Premier.

The sad news has become known that the Hon John Ballance died on Thursday evening. His loss will be keenly felt by the party he led and by the Colony generally. Mr Ballance was born in 1889 at Glenavy County Antrim and arrived in the Colony in 1866. He settled in

Wanganui arid was jthe founder of the Wanganui JTeKald. In. 1875 he wis _li_l_t__l for Mahgi.il.ei anel reelected in 1876. He became Colo nial Treasurer in 1878 but retired owing to a disagreement with his Uhief, Sir George Grey. In 1879 he was elected for Wanganui but lost his seat at the election itt the year i_81; biit regained it in, 1884 and retained it t. tlie date of his untimely death. He assumed the position of Premier in 1891 The cause of his death is said to have been a stricture in the course of the bowels.
