The return match between the Foxton and Carnarvon state Schools was played on Saturday on the Carnarvon ground, and resulted in a handsome win fur the Fbxtonians. The teams were more evenly matched than on the occasion of their last meeting at. Foxton when the Foxton boys sustained a crushing defeat. As one of the boys philosphically remarked, " It was practice did the trick." Before the match in Foxton the ' arnarvon boys had been practising like tigers, aid were in very good form ; the Foxton boys seemed to think it rather lowering to their dignity to practise at all. And they certainly did not lower their dignity by undue practice. Ihe Carnarvon lads very cheerfully lowered it for them, and at the same time taugiit them a useful lesson, which they took to heart more than some of their school lessons. For some time past the Foxtonians (we mean the school Club, ot course ; the men's club appears to have died an untimely death) have been practising with much assiduity; hence their victory. Experience pi'pves the usual rule ; the Carnarvon lads have more or less been- resting? on their laurels ; hence their defeat. The game was played thronghVut with the greatest good-nature, and nothing occurred to mar the general, enjoyableness of the day. The Foxton lads, under the care of Mr W. Stansell, Assistant, were taken out in good style to " the tented field" in one of Mr StansjßU-s coaches, and we are pretty sure that the boys enjoyed the day's outing much more than the horses did. The game resulted in a win for the Foxton boys- more power to them ! — by 16 runs on the first innings. We append the scores : —
