Lawn Tennis.

The local Tennis Club, founded some four or five months ago, is flourishing exceedingly. At the outset, as a matter of form, the number of members was limited to forty ; but already it has been found neees* sary to, .enlarge , the. limit to admit more and more members, and ' ' the cry is, ; Still they come." Another

court (grass) has been laid down, and will be ready for play, it is hoped, in about a month. Then even the keenest players will be able to gratify their desire for set after set in succession without interfering with the privileges and rights of others. We learn that, in order to foster .interest in this very pleasant game, the committee have promoted a tournament amongst the members, rather an an ambitious attempt in -such a young club ; but " Alls well that ends well ; " and, as may be seen below, nearly all the .most prominent players are taking part. Appended are the Gentlemen's Handicaps, made out to the best of their ability by the committee : —

The first event in this tournament, we are informed, was played off on Friday between Messrs H Gower and G. Pctter, and resulted after a stubborn fight in a win for Gower. The c 1033 of the set was" quite exciting, both players having scored 5 games and vantage all when Potter gave his opponent a miss and lost. In our naxt issue we propose to give the Handicaps of the Ladies' Tournament, and the result of events played off.
