1.0. G.T.

(Communicated.)

The open meeting of the "Try Again" Lodge, 1.0. G.T., held on Thursday evening in the Temperance Hall, was an unmistakable success. In spite of the inclemency of the weather, the HalLwas^ filled to the doors by a large audience consisting of " all sorts and conditions " of people. We are pleased to be able to state that the meeting from beginning to end was marked by an hasj ;pjhlajfce begun' to manifest' itself so disagreeably at some of o«r public gatherings. The chair was occupied by the Chief Templar, Mr .^.>S. Stewart. In the course of a $rief preliminary address explainingfjihe nature and object of the meeting t^ie Chairman took occasion to congratulate the Lodge and the people of Foxton on the remarkable progress of the Temperance cause recently in the town and neighbournobd< The Lodge, he stated, was re-opened jn May with a roll number of 18.; there are now 65 members in god standing, and about a score of candidates, for initiation at an early date— a condition of things more satisfactory to the Good Templars than to the hotellteepers, probably 1 A good programme of the usual Temperance character was then gone 1 through* in a highly creditable manne* and without a hitch from start to finish by selected members of the Lodge. The following" brotheraf&nil took part in the entertainment, " bringing out of their treasures things, new and old " in' the way of songs, readings, and dramatic pieces to the entire satisfaction of the audience : - Sisters Howe, . Gray, Spring and Simpson, anclßrothfirs Osbdrrie, Simpson, Furrie, Westwood/ Foster, and Spring, Jun. The Eev. Mr Duncan, who is not actually a member of the Lodge, but who has been a strong advocate of temperance for the last 60 years, also gave a short address and a somewhat lengthy reading, both admirable in their way. The meeting closed at 9.45 with the G.T. Closing Ode. .
