Foxton Borough Counoil.

A special meeting of the Foxton Borough Council was held at the Library buildings on Saturday at 2 p.m. Preseut^The Mayor (G. Nye), Crs Mcmillan, Startup, Ahern, Stansell, Williams, and Austin.

The Mayor stated that the special meeting had been called to consider the further offer from Messrs Lord & Lewis

'1 he contractors declined the offer made hy the Council, but offered to make another trial with a 2 inoh pipe on the terms of the last contract provided they were allowed to try a site about 7or 8 chains to the eastwards of the Main -street with the addition that if water was obtained £15 bonus be given. Cr McMillan desired to state that in the report of the last meeting he had been misrepresented as having been opposed to the well, he had objected to the proposal to pay the extra 2s a foot, but he still was strongly in favour of having a well. Cr Williams pointed out how reasonable the offer ofthe contractors was and he favoured their proposal. ... ... ... .-

Cr McMillan was now in favour of a 3 inch pipe, as if the well was driven away from Main- street a larger flow would be needed to supply the larger area that would be served by the well.

The Mayor said he had gone very carefully into the question of cost he found that the contractors offer was not out of the way as his estimate „was only £8 lower than their's. He thought the 2 inch pipe would supply all the water needed for some time, but it would be wiser to have a 3 inch pipe considering the future needs.

Mr Lewis then appeared and was fully cross-questioned.

On Mr Lewis leaving the, Council went into committee.

On resuming it was proposed by Cr McMillan, seconded by Cr Austin, That Messrs Lord and Lewis' offer be accepted for a 8 inch pipes on the same terms as their original offer for a 2 inch pipe. And that a bonus of ten pounds bo allowed them if successful in finding water. —Carried.
