Report of the Carnarvon Tramway.

» At the last meeting of the Manawatu County Council Mv Charles Bray's report on the Tramway was read. It will be noticed he admits having inspected the broken tire of the driving wheel of the engine

" Fox " and aayß he noticed ifc Be* cured with three bolts ! As a matter of fact there were only two half inch belts. He reported that the bolts " may stand for some time, but I do not consider it a permanent job (who would ?), nor is it safe for traffic as they might break at any time and cause considerable damage." Why then, we ask, wag the engine allowed to run ? The following is Mr Bray's report :— " linspected the Sandon-Carnarvon tramway and the engine " Fox " on the 23rd of May last and found the tramway from Carnarvon to Hickford's line in fair order exept three rails which were worn out and should be replaced by new ones. From Hickford's line to Sandon the line is much out of re < pair and unsafe for traffic in many places A portion of this length requires fresh balJast as there is not sufficient to pack the sleepers with, as stated in my last report of November 24th, 1891. There is also a new rail required near the Sandon station and some fresh bolts. The engine " Fox " on May 28rd was in fair repair except the bearings of the side rods, which required re fitting or replacing with new ones. Hay ing heard that one of the tires of one of the wheels was broken, I went to see it and found it secured with three bolts which may stand for some time, but I do not consider it a permanent job, nor is it safe for traffic as they might break at any time and cause considerable damage. There is little or no damage done to the wheels by putting the bolts through, as the wheels are very strong. The bearings of the side rods have been re-fitted. The whole of the tires are worn very thin, and as one [is broken, I would recommend that a new set be put on. The repairs of the " Wallabi " should be completed as soon as possible so as to take the place of the " Fox " while the tires are being put on."
