Fatal Accident at Johnsonville.

♦ A MAN FALLS OFF A TRAIN AND IS KILLED. A sad accident, resulting fatally, occurred to a man named D. F. ; Anderson, who "was a passenger by 1 the Manawafcn Railway Company's 5.80 train from Wellington yester- , day. When the train wos about 100 yards this side of the viaduct, just ■ past Johnsonville, Anderson, who ; was standing on the platform of the \ smoking carriage, was just putting his match box into his pocket when • the train went smartly round the ' curve and he fell off backwards. The ! alarm was at once given ; the train i was stopped, and returned to the • mail's assistance. His body was ; found lying near the line, and was \ at once taken back to Johnsonville, i on the train, which then proceeded • on its journey. Dr Collins, of Wel- ; lington, was at once telegraphed for, 5 and although, by means of a special train, which was at once put on by , tha Company, he arrived in less ' than half an hour, Anderson was found to b 8 quite dead. His injuries consist chiefly of a terrible !■ wound on the back of the head, the ! scalp being almost torn off, and ! death is supposed to have been in- ! stantaneous. The smoking carriage 1 was the third from the end of the 1 train, and it seems probable that ■ the deceased was thrown against the side of the cutting and rebounded on 1 to the carriages, as it seems scarcely 1 possible that such a severe injury 1 could have been sustained other- ■ wise. The sad occurrence was at once reported to the Coroner, but the date of the inquest has not yet been fixed. Meanwhile the body is lying at the Eailway Hotel, Johnsonville* 1 The deceased, who is a storekeeper at Paraparaumu, is well known in Wellington, having at one time kept a store at the corner of Manners street and Herbert street^ He leaves a widow and sever^y children.— N.Z.
