Serious Assault in Tory Street.

A good deal of sensation was caused in Tory street on Wednesday evening when it became known that a quarrel had occurred between two men living in that thoroughfare which had resulted in one of them being taked to the hospital, suffering from very serious injuries. It appears that a man named J. G. Welch, a bootmaker, paid a visit to the house of Thomas Bransgrove, who is also a bootmaker, and commenced abusing him with respect to some trade matter. Bransgrove resented the insulting and abusive language used to him by his rival in trade, and, following him outside into the street, struok him and felled him to the ground. In falling Welch's head beoame into contact with the pavement. It was apparent that he was severely injured, and Dr-Mackin was at once sent for. On his arrival he found that the injured man had sustained a severe fracture of the skull, and also that hemorrhage of the brain had set in, about a quart of blood pouring out of the ear. Dr Mackin at once ordered his removal to the Hospital, where he still is in an unconscious state. The police were at once in formed of the occurrence, and Detective Campbell proceeded to the scene of the affray, and took Bransgrove into custody. Unless Welch should die in the meantime, Bransgrove will be charged with causing grievious bodily harm, but the medical authorities at the Hospital state that it is almost impossible for their patient to recover, and the affair is therefore likely to prove of a very serious nature. — N.Z.
