Terrible distress is caused by the recent earthquake in Japan, and assistance is being sought from England. The liquidator of the Panama Canal Company reports that a new Company must be established, otherwise the liquidation will be final. It is understood that an Amerscan syndicate is anxious to purchase the works, but that Congress is opposed, being convinced that the future of navigation to China and Australia by the American route would best be served by the Nicaraguan scheme, Much is now well under way. In Paris an Anarchist painted the words " Long live Anarchy " in red upon the Italian Embassy in Paris. The financial crisis is severely felt in St. Petersburg and is affecting even the Imperial Bank. Fighting has taken place between rival factions in Damaraland, resulting 54 persons being killed. A great fire in St Louis almost completely destroyed blocks in Broadway and Franklin avenue. The damage is estimated at a quarter of a million.
