Owing to the failure of HirschfieldWolff Barik. both, members of the firm of Sommeriield and Son, bankers in Berlin attempted to commit suicide. It is reported that one is dead, and the other is in a critical condition . The liabilities of the bank amount to several million marks. The Berlin Banks were open throughout Sunday in order to aid withdrawals, and thus restore confidence. The failure of Foinmerfield and ons, bankers, is attributed to their investing in Russian securities. The Standard's Berlin correspondent wires that the commercial ! depression in Germany is the greatest known for thirty years past. A crisis is feared paling and even more ruinous than that of 1873. The discovery of a plot to murder the Czar is given as a reason for his avoiding Berlin. The Bank of Russia is conferring with other banks on the financial situation, which is regarded as critical,
