Captain tfhaw, who recently resigned the superintendency of the Metropolitan Fire Brigade, which he has held since its commencement in 1886, has been created a Knight of the Bath. The Hon A. J. Balfour has been elected Chancellor of Edinburgh. A priest in <"'ork destroyed with a stick the eye of a boy who was cheering Mr John Redmond. A woman belonging to the National Press office discovered a conspiracy to kill Messrs O'Brien and Dillon. The attempt was to have been made on a lonely road, and she, observing the would-be murderers creeping on their victims, shouted, at which the former decamped. Mr W. O'Brien has refused to accept police protection. The seceders attacked the Parnellites in Cork, and routed the musicians and smashed their instruments. During an emeute in Cork the other day, Messrs John O'Connor and Wm. Redmond were injured. The Freeman's Journal says it is rumoured that in the event of Mr John Redmond being defeated for Cork, the remainder of the party will resign their seats. A large number of persons were injured during the disturbance in Cork, and 92 were treated at Cork Infirmary. The reported plots to murder Dillon and O'Brien are disbelieved. Large drafts of police are being made to Cork in order to suppress the disturbances which have been prevalent there lately. Mounted troopers are guarding Mr Dillon. The nominations for Cork seat will be received on Tuesday, and the poll takes place on Friday.
