A boy is wanted for the Soho hemp mill
The Borough Council meeting yesterday afternoon was the shortest on i 1 ? i^vA. Not a single attempt was made to postpone anything. Two Councillors were ?.bi= -nt, one ho iday making in the othf-r, probably holi ay n.a iug ntrror home, ihe Councillors present were serioup, one had the proposed designs of the new hospital on his mind, another was wondering when he would get the drain in front of his property covered in, another thought of the nuisarvvs of hemp mills and the dangers the public run in r> "' thpm, and the ast, strnck ' --- sBtn S chairs which graced " -«*«'« ™w thinkinstof"*' ''V 3 chamber, ,ras sorrowed Plumes." -c N.£. Times of „. esterday says : — It is with much regret we have to announce the sudden death of Lady Buller, wife of Sir Walter Buller, of the Terrace, which took place at an early hour on Sunday morning. Dr Henry, who had been attending her ladyship, was promptly sent for, but was too late to be of any service, death having resulted from sudden failure of the heart's action. Lady Buller had been in poor health for some time, but her demise was totally unexpected, find wi 1 bo deeply regretted by a very large oirole of relations and friends, by all of whom she was highly esteemed and beloved. Mr De Castro, late of the Public Trust Office, has been exchanged with Mr McCarthy, of the Government Life Insurance Department, yet in both cases of affectionate leave taking, it was announced that it meant promotion ! How can this be? Walter Nelley, assistant clerk of the Hokitika County Council, obtained leave of absence to go to Christehiuoh. His accounts have been found to bo •' crooked," and a warrant has been issued for his arrest. Some of the cablegrams are very amusing. A change is evidently about to be made, they are to be more geographical. The minuteness of description in the following cablegram from New York is an instance : — The mail steamer Moselle has been wrecked off Aspinall or Colon, a seaport of Colombia, South America, on the north shore of the Isthmus of Panama." The passengers and crew were saved. There is one advantage about this new departure, and that is, when the shipwrecked passengers and crew read the papers, they will know where they are. Mr A. H. Knowles, manager of the Bank of Australasia at Waipawa, had a very narrow escape from drowning last Saturday week. It appears that Mr Knowles, in company with Dr Godfrey, went for a bathe in the Waipawa River. After swimming about for some time, and finding that he had got into an eddy, Mr Knowles tried to get upon a rock that was almost perpendicular. He failed and fell back into the water, which was about 20ft deep. He tried to swim to another landing place against the current. The doctor, who was a short distance away, called out to him to swim with the current, but no sooner did he turn to do so than the strong current that was running at the time forced him under the water. Dr Godfrey hastened at once to the spot, and diving down brought Mr Knowles to the suvfaoe, who by this time was very much c hausted. Mr Knowles has quite recovered from the effects, and is about again as usual.
