It is reported that the expedition explored the passes in Pamir a Plateau as far as tha southern spur of the Hindoo Koosch Range.
At the instance of Russia the Porte has prohibited the use of the Bulgarian language in the churches of Macedonia, a district ot Rounielia, Turkey in Europe. This action has much incensed the residents in Bulgaria.
The Chilian Government has refused to allow representatives of foreign Powers to hold an enquiry into the outrage on the sailors of the United States navy. The Chilian Government demands the recall of Mr Patrick Egan, the United States Minister. President Harrison favours the request, but Mr J. G. Blame, the Secretary of State objects, and serious differences in the Cabinet has been the result. Chili is showing a defiant attitude to the American demands, and it is alleged that the believes England will come to her assistance. The Monte Carlo Gambling Company pays a dividend of 39 per cent. The receipts were £900,000, and the working expenses £400,000. Russia is mobilising strongly in Warsaw. The Russian press is urging that support be given to France is demanding the English evacuation of Egypt and state that it is dangerous to Europe to allow England to control that country. France and Russia are now consulting on the question of a protest being entered against English control and insisting on adhesion to the terms of the treaties. It is estimated that four thousand were killed by the earthquake in Japan. The towns of Ajaki, Kasamantau, and Hono were destroyed, the latter being entirely demolished by the sea. All the residents perished. Seventy miles of railway were destroyed, and the officials were paralysed and unable to relieve the sufferers. Fire destroyed the Crown port of Mamaya. The Chilian Government has declined to accept the responsibility for the outrage on the United States sailors. The United States cruiser Baltimore is virtually boycotted thei'e, owing to action taken in connection with the row between some of her crew and the Chilians. The Times, in referring to the strained relations between the United States and Chili, and the threatened outbreak of war, declares ( that Chili for the moment is better prepared to fight than America, and it would be dangerous for the present American Squadron to threaten Valparaiso. Owing to the defiant reply of the Chilian Government to the United States the situation is regarded as grave and action is imminent.
