Maukau

(from our own correspondent.) Mr Platts, assisted by his pupils and friends, gave his second concert in the schoolroom on Friday evening, The following took part : — Misses ilurlev (8), Wallace, Tillev, Mrs Bethune, Messrs Platts, Death, Bills, and Little. The excellent manner in Avhich the younger performers played showed that their musical education is in good hands. After the concert a most enjoyoble dance was held, and kept the young folks moving gaily till the small hours. Since last writing there have been several changes. Mr Dwan has disposed of his hotel to Mr Mcintosh. Mr H. Henson has sold his farm to

M-_ James, of Wellington, ' JfcHb. figure was, I believe, ittl lolkAtt acre ; satisfactory I should say for a new bush settlement. Mr James intends to take up his residence here, as soon as his house is completed. The carpenters are hard at work upon it now. The site is a beautiful one, on a lovely little knoll which overlooks the whole of the township.

The streets in the township are just about complete, and they give the place a much more civilised look. One almost forgets what Manukau was like in the days when we had no roads at all.

The local Oddfellows Lodge appears to be in a prosperous condition, new members being admitted nearly every lodge night. Dr Drury, of Havelock, has begun to practice in Otaki, as Dr Franting is obliged to leave owing to ill health.

The new Masonic Lodge is to be Opened in Otaki on the thirteenth of next month. It is intended to celebrate the occasion by having a grand Masonic ball. A large number of visiting brethren are expected to be present.

Farmers complain of the want of sheep. They are scarcely to be had at even the top prices. Meantime the grass is simply going to waste.
