More Beer.

Since the above article was written we find that the Government have strained their powers even beyond that we supposed they would have done. The constable, acting upon his instructions, has applied to the Magistrates for leave to withdraw his information against Mr Border, but we understand this has been refused as the magistrates, not having as yet heard the case, and the information having been sworn to, they naturally believe that a pi ima facia case for inquiry had been made, and that in the interests of the public the case should have been decided in open court, where all parties could have been heard. The Liberal Government, through its Minister of justice, has thought fit to determine the case, with hearing only the most interested parties, and in that off hand manner, characteristic of inexperienced officials, has ordered, not ,only the prosecution to be abandoned, but has permitted Mr Border to open his house. How this has been accom-

plished is for farther explanation, but it appears unnecessary for any Government supporter to observe any Act of Parliament. We are not writing against Mr Border, as we are pleased that he is not to be in convenienced by his admitted oversight. We cannot condemn the action of the Government strong enough. They have permitted the public to see that when they think it is to their interest they are prepared to proceed to any action, however much against the law or justice it may be,
