Manamatu Herald. THURSDAY, JUNE 25, 1891. Liberalism and Beer.

On Tuesday when the case of the Police v. Border was called on, the constable stated that, by orders from his superior ofiicor in Wellington, he had to ask for an adjournment for fourteen days. The case is a very simple one, it being an omission on the part of Mr Border to apply for a transfer of the license held by Mr Hunter, at the same meeting of the Licensing Committee as that at which he obtained a new license. As the meeting was held early this month, and the new licenses do not come into force until the first of July, the temporary transfer was needed to license Mr Border to sell till then. This was overlooked, and the constable had to lay an information against Mr Bonier. The case was beyond disputing and for a time the premises aye closed. An impression is abroad that the < overnment are willing to strain all sorts oi Acts for the benefit of their friends, and as a personal application was made at Wellington, and instructions to the constable were forwarded by telegram, there certainly appears grounds for thinking so. Whether the owner of the premises moved in the matter we are not aware, but we can hardly think the licensee had so much power about the throne. It does not appear satisfactory that a Government should endeavour to shield an offender, even of so unintentional a fault as that we refer to, but' a Liberal Government has so many claims upon them that it appears they have lo do any and everything their supporters call upon them to do. It is rather an absurd position for a•■ Government placed in power, and kept there by the Knights of Labour, one of whose principle planks in their platform is Temperance, should so soon have shown their weakness by wobbling between water and beer in this weak-kneed manner.
