Gambling.
" In proportion as gambling prevails in society, energy is withdrawn from legitimate trade and industry, families are deprived of due parental care and support, and men of all classes are tempted to the crimes of theft, forgery, and even suicide. The gamb'ing spirit is essentially selfish, its aim is to get the money of others without doing anything to earn or deserve it. and is fast transforming not only the horse race, but the healthy amusements and manly ■pors of football, cricket, and the boat race into training grounds for betting and its accompanying evils." [Extract from a protest of Church of England and non-conformist Ministers against gambling.],
