Discovery of a Marvellous Grotto.
A grotto has been discovered at Ajaccio, which is said to exceed any ever known for magnificence and size. The site is a little over a mile from the Ponte-Seccia railway station. The grotto is entered with difficulty, owing to the smallness of the aperture, -but this difficulty once got over the. explorer finds himself in a vast and lofty hall, the sides of which are some twenty-five yards in height. From this there are several passages leading to an indefinite number- of other chambers. A thorough investigation of the grotto has not yet been made. Tourists have attempted to explore its depths, but after six or eight hours' work have returned to the open air with their skin incomplete, but full of marvellous descriptions of its fairy-like beauty. On one occasion a workman undertook to penetrate the whole extent of the grotto. He was supplied with provisions and torches of resinous wood. He was five day's inside, and during that time he estimates that he walked a distance of forty miles, and was only compelled to retrace his steps by encountering a sheet of water which i precluded his further advance. He. never succeeded in reaching the farthest extremity of the grotto, or rather the supposed other outlet, 'which" is* believed to be upon the sea, not far from Cape Revelleta and Calvi. In the latter place there is a know,n cave of great depth, and as yet unexplored. /lit; is on a level almost with tjhe sea, and-is known as the Grotto dif Mugissement. What adds to the belief that the PonteSeccia cave and that at Cavli are one i and that the whole comprehend a vast subterranean passage sixty miles in length, is the story told by a goatheard, that having totally lost sight of his flock for several days, he was astonished one morning to hear that they had heen seen at a spot near Calvi. It is in contemplation to organise an expedition to Ajaccio in the summer for the purpose of solving the mysteries of the cavern.
