The Financial Policy of the Government.

— — — * Ministers have, we are in a position to state, determined to propose the imposition of a graduated tax upon landed properties, with a large exemption for improvements. The amount of the exemption is not yet fixed, as the calculations necessary to guide the Treasurer in his financial estimates are not yet ready. These calculations are, we understand, now being made. It is probable that Joint Stock Companies will be taxed on their profits instead of upon their capital. The Government is considering the question of proposing an income tax, and calculations are being made jas a guide to financial results. The tax will probably be decided upon, but nothing has as yet been fixed as the amount of the exemption. — N. Z. Times.
