♦ When that mighty thoroughbred, Hermit, died last May, Mr Chaplin announced bis intention of having his skeleton preserved. To Mr Rowland Ward, the eminent natural* is£ of Piccadilly, the task of setting up the bones was entrusted. The work is now completed, and Mr Ward has every reason to be proud of it. The skeleton of the sensational Derby victor of 1867 has been set up and strengthened by an iron framework, and the structure exhibits a curious development of beauty ;<nd strength, the building of the legs being most gracefully tapered and it is easy in the mi id's eye to cover the bare bone 3of the oncebeautiful pride of the Blankney paddocks with the powerful muscles and flesh which were attached to them in life. The skeleton now stands 15.3, and measures from the rump to the nose 7ft lliu. The skeleton has been presented by Mr Chaplin to the Boyal Veterinary Col e^e, while the hoof*, the hide and every other valuable part of the emperor of stallions have been cooverted into cigar-cases, purses, pocket-books, and other souveuirs. Mr Chaplin, it is said won fully 4*80,000 when the son of Newminster carried off the Derby, and the progeny of Hermit between them won a sum of £843,311. — People.
