Burnt to Death.

The N. Z. Tunes states that Inspector Thompson received the folfowijg telegram from Sergeant Hannan of Otald yesterday morning .' — " A. Maori woman named Piai Koutu 87 years of age, the mother of James Wallace, butcher, of Otaki, was accidentally burned to death in her \vha.ie at Otaki at 4 o'clock tin's morning." She was very feeble, and was in the habit of sleeping with her bed close to the fire, which she kept burning all night, and it is thought she kicked some portion of the bedding into the fire. She lived alone, within twenty yards of her son's house, Portions of the trunk, skull and arms were recovered from the fire by Mr Wallace and a man named Warrie, who were the first to discover the fire about 4.30 a.m. An inquest will be held.
