The Strike.
Owing to the Union S. S. Co, refusing to leave the Ship owners As sociation of Sydney, the Maritime Council have called all the seamen employed by the Company out.
The N Z. Times says there is an opinion, baaed pn good information, prev>ile<>t in shipping quarters that should the whole of the Union and local steamers be laid up there are anvill steamers owned by prira'e individuals or small syndicates in Auek ; and which could be put on the coastal trade. Mo«t of these steamers are in the hands of non onion men, and thpy could he uti isad for the Southern trarfe.
With regard to the difficulties which are anticipate! fro-n tho want of coaU we understand that the Riilway Commissioners intend at once reducing the number of trains running on the Wellington, Wanganui, and Napier sections to four days a week. Reductions of a similaf nature will also take pace o\i the Hurunnrßluff section in conserjmnce of suspe sion of wharf traffic The men wil only got paid for the days they work.
In the workshops the hours of work will be reduced, but what the extent of the redaction will be is not finally decided upon. The men will on.y get paid for the tine they work.
Several of the leading merchants called their emp oyes together yes terday and explained tlmt as Jo:;al trade W;is about to be paralysed by the strike question, they were under the necessity of giving a number of their hands a week's nutioe of dis' uiis-al, for through the stagnation of basin ss they were compelled to redace their expenses.
