MEMORIES.
How stranpeW intermingle The threads both dark and light Which memory is weaving Into a v>s>b tonight. WWia sitting by the fivoKght I muse on days long pa -it. Days that were bright and joyous And day* with grief o'ercast. Days when fond hopes were cherished, Days' when those hopes had fled, Davß'whea de;ir friends were with me, Dayp when I mourned t'lem dead. And as once more in fancy I live them o'er Again. * Swoet thoughts with bitter mingle* Giving bath joy and pain. While sitting by the firelighb I'm trying to mall Long vanished forms and faces, And words dear lips let fall. How faintly sound their voices Like to a distant chime ! How dimly seen their facca Across the mists of time ! But though time seems to take them Farther from mo away, 'Tis only bringing nearer The glad re-union day. When uot as cherished momorioi Those lor «d ones shall b#,
Butliving, briglit realities With joy I shall them see. My memory still is busy &nd. brings to mind anew, The iTtany things I've done, which now I wish I ?opld undo. Sad thoughts arisi? Pi wasted hours No trace of which appears, Of days, which unimproved passed by, Throughout the bye-go:ne yeata. Time past is gone for ever, To wish it back is vain ; May I then rightly use the days That yet to me remain. For very soon the time will come When I myself shall be To friends, whom I shall leave on earth, A fading memory. B.D.
