THE SAFE ROBBERY.

— ♦— _ 'f hough Alleudale is safely in gaol them aye still others about who have no hesitation in taking Government property. On Sunday morning as the guard of Saturday night's train approached the statiomaster'* oniee. at the Foxton station, he discovered the door open, instead of being sectnjely locked as it was the night previoos. Further examination showed that the safe had been removed, and on hunting about it was found lying on the railway K»e about 260 yards away from the station. The door of the office had evidently been fcrtwd: with a crowbar, and the back' of the safe seems to have been opened with the samt? instrument, as the back has been cut oh two sides and forced back in a similar manner to what a sardine tin is when opeued. The value obtained was not large being between £16 and £17 in coin, the cheques and other papers were not disturbed. The thieves had left very nearly £4 worth of silver behind, which had got mixed with the sawdust packing between the two eases of the safe. The robbery is a singularly daring one, as it must have beeu committed between 9 p.m. of Saturday and 9 a.m. of Sunday. The safe is a heavy one weighing some 4£ cwt, and must have required some force to move.- A truck does not seem to have been brought info requisition but that the safe was slid along one of the rails to the point at which it was broken into. The noise required to force the safe must have been considerable, and though a house is close by on the bank where the snfe was broken, and a strong wind was blowing towards it, no one seems to have heard any suspicious sounds. Detective Tuohy was in town and has the matter in hand but it will be a difficult; riddle to solve. Perhaps when the Government have made a few wore losses, they may arrive at the conclusion that extra police supervision will pay.
