For some weeks past an effort has been made by the" young men eraployed in the stores in this town to obtain one half holiday in the week. The project floated aloig serenely until it ran against one, of whom bettor things were thought, but T
fter a stoppage, yet it proved one only, and now the fact is aeeonvplished. It is therefore gratifying to find that the employers admit the advantage » of affording their employe* some time in the week day f«»r their rational amusement. We are sure tbat the public will coinoitle |in this view and will agree to postI pone their dealing for one day m tbe week. If we were urging a concession of a htff holiday we couM have shown the many good reasons that exist for its establishment,, as close confinement at the flesfe or counter for six days continuously, must necessarily force the Sunday to be dcv ted more to the invigoratingof bodily health, than to tbe purpose to Which it should be Six days con fihement offers no very great inducement to further indoor attendance on the seventh day However as the concession has been made it appears that all parties have arrived at the same conclusion as we have. The arrangemement will be now that nil stores will close on Tuesdays at one o'clock. The dny seems oddly paced but it cannot be helped, as it happens to be the least busy day, and one on winch no midday train "arrives.
