THE " EXPERT'S " REPORT OH THK BAR.
• His Worship the Mayor has been good enough to furnish us with the following letter and communication. 16.2.'89 "lb the Mayob, Foxton, Dbar Sib,— I have received the enclosed communication from Government re the river, and beg to hand it to you, as your Borough are more immediately interested than any other local body. Tours faithfully, James Gt. Wilson. Public Works Department, Wellington, 14th Feb., 1889. Ra improving entrance to Manawatu Bar. Sib, —In pursuance ot the promise on the above mentioned subject made to you in the House last ses* sion, I have now the honor to inform you that a careful inspection of the mouth of the river haa since been made, and a report on the subject obtained, from which it appears that it would be impossible to erect permanent works, capable of diverting the river to its old course for anything lite £1500 or £2000 (the amount; mentioned by you in the j House). The Grovernment is also advised that before the actual extent of the works that would be rerequired for the purpose mentioned could be decided upon, it would be necessary for a detailed survey to be made, which would require to be of considerable extent, and which alone would involve large expense. Under these circumstances, therefore, I oan only express my regret that I am unable to see my way clear to do anything farther in the matter at present. I have the honour i<rbe, Sir, Your obedient servant, G. F. Richardson, for Minister for Publio Works.
