EDUCATION BOARD.
♦ [Compiled from Wauganui Herald.] The Board met on Wednesday, Mr Sanson iv the chair. Children Under School Age. — The Secretary read a circular from the Government referring to the attendance of children under five years. The Secretary further reported that by the quarterly return on the 31st March there were 285 children attending tht, Board's schools under five years of age. The number would be greatly reduced on the 30th June, as many were within two or three months of the required age. — After considerable discussion it was resolved on the motion of Mr Notman, seconded by Mr Coutts, That the teachers be requested to prepare a special statement showing the number of children under five years of age attending the schools on 20th June, in addition to the usual 'quarterly returns, which on this occasion will exclude the children under I that age, and that with the view of permit- ! tingr arrangements to be made by the £?omi mittee with the parents the Board would recommend in the meantime that no childI ren be excluded from the schools. — Re- : solved that the Secretary write to each of j the Committees of the small schools, where ! the salary is limited to the capitation, ; recommending them to take steps to make | up any deficiency in the teacher's salary i caused by the circular excluding infants ! under five years. j Jackeytown— Lotter fronti Mr Monrad stating ttiat the school district had been ', proclaimed about 16 months, and no school | had been erected. He now enclosed a list showing that there were 42 children bei tween 5 and 15 years in the district. —Mr • Suelson supported the application. After j considerable discussion it was moved by Mr Snelson, and seconded by Mr Coutts, that plans be forwarded to the Committee of a school to accommodate 50 children. Carried. Kiwitea, — Applications for school assistance received from Beacnnsfleld, and from Kimbolton Road. — The Inspector reported that in the Beaconsfield district there were 20 children of schiol age, and 15 below 5 years of age. On the Kimbolton road there were 17 children of school age. The settlers were building a school 30 x 16ft. by private subscriptions. Resolved that replies be sent requesting the settlers to elect a committee and define boundaries of district.
