THE MAORI CENSUS.
Withthe view of ascertaining the total population of Manawatu, both European and Maori, we requested Mr Ward, R.M., to give us permission to publish the results of the late native census, conducted under his supervision. He has kindly furnished us with the information, for which we have to express our acknowledgments. The following are the results :—
If to this we add the population of 8,510 returned under the European census, we have a grand total of 9,897 souls in the county of Manawatu. Mr Ward also supplies us with the following information : — " The total Maori population of Rangitikei and Manawatu (exclusive of Turakina, Wangaehu. and Matatera) is 1,321 ; the population returned in 1878 was 1,538; ; showing a decrease in the present return of 217. Ido not think the population is less than the number returned in 1878. I consider the decrease of 217 represents the number of Maoris who were at the time tho census was taken attending the sittings of the Native Lands Courts at Cambridge ( Waikato) and Taupo, and others who were away from the district visiting their friends in Napier and Wanganui."
