FOXTON HIGHWAYS BOARD.
Wednesday, April 20, 1880. The Board met at the Athenaeum at 7 p ra. Present — Messra Thynne (Chairman), Cirter. Gower, and Cobb. The miuutea of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. The meeting of the Board had been called for Easter Monday, but the Chairman stated he had adjourned the meeting in the interests of the members of the Board ; that day having been a public holiday. — The Chairman's action met with the approval of the Board. TENDERS. The following tenders ware read : — For work in No. 2 Ward— W. H. Reeve, £42 ; J. Guerin, £38. The latter tender was ac cepted, subject to a contribution being made by the Messrs Oliver Bros. , aa promised. Work in No. 5 Ward.— G. Gaerin,— Formation (per chain), 16* ; sandin?, (per chain), Ids ; clearing drain from Elkins' corner (per chain), 6). Thii was the only tender received for this work, but it was declined on the ground of its being too high. THE AWARD. Letter read from the Colonial Secretary's office, covering the award made as to the amounts to be paid to the Foxton Board byjthe Manawatu Highways Board. DRAIN'AOE. A lengthy discu^si >n took place in r.-fer-ence to an application made by Mr C Symons for a floodg tte to •>« erected at the entrance of a drain passing through his property to the river. Thin brought up the question of the drainage in that vicinity. — The Chairman contended that by th» Public \V(»rkß Aofc the Board had no authority to deal with any drains other than those alongside the roads. He also expressed the opinion that Mr Symons was greatly inconvenionced by other settlers in that vicinity forcing the water through his land, and he believed Mr Symons would hive a good claim against the Board for compensation if the matter were brought before the court, a step he threatened to tako aol«4« th« evil wm abated. Chairman further stated that the other settlers should be compelled by means of the Public Works Act, if necesßary to take their share of the drainage through their lands to the river. — Mr Gower contended that Mr Symons was a consenting party to the present drain being made nine yean ago. — Eventually the matter was held ever. FEXCIN'O ROADS. A letter was read from Mr R. Cobb, of Moutoa, asking permission to hang gates across three roads along the boundary of his property. As it was shown that the roads iv question were not used, the required permission was given during the pleasure of the Board. REMOVAL OF A HOUSE. It was resolved to give Mr H. Webb notice to remove his house off the highway road within fourteen days. ST.XT MEETING. The next meeting of the Board was ordered to be held on the 2nd May, at 7 p.m.
