CUSTOMS SEIZURE.
A few weeks ago, Mr B. Dawson, the Foxton stationmaster, who is also officer of Customs, noticed a small ca«k rolled <>ut of ■he train on t<> the platform, and a- it was covered with a s>ek ho enquired of the person in wh >se charge it was what it contained. He was informed by the person in charge of it I hat it contained sheep dip, and that it -.as to go to Wellington t<> a certain firn. in w!iob»i emp'oy he was. Not feeling satisfied, Mr Dawson examined the cask and foun I it contained whNky. He thereupon took possession of it imd had it remov dto the Custom house. From what we have beeu able to gather Mr T. P. Williams, storekeeper, of Foxton, was authorised by the person wh» brought the cask to Foxton to ship it to Wellington, and lie Williams informs us that at the time ho knew the cask contained whitkj, but that the person in whose e'ian>o it was explained that he wished it to be thought that it was sheep dip, t" prevent tlie railway officials and other persons through whoce hands <t would pass snmpling it. We hear there has been a considerable amount of correspondence in connection with the affair, and that it is probable the cask will be shipped to Wellington for further enquiries to be made.
