At the start Barmaid rushed to the front and led round by four lengths, Purcell being unable to hold her, all the other horses running together. On nearing the straight Chief closed on the mare, and after entering the straight both horses raced neck-and neck, Chief winning by half-a-lcngth, both the riders Hogging hard. Ths fi st round Ngawere led. but after passing the stand Skylark took the lead, and was never caught. There was somo talk of a protest on the ground of jostling by the fh*3t horse, but nono was entered. W. Reeves rode Skylark. HACK RACE.— Venture ... ••• ... 1 Paddy Carey ... •■ ••• 2 This was a good raco. Six entries*. PONY RACE.— For this there were five entries. It was wou by Lloyd's (Porirua) pony. another bad accident. Besides the hurdle accident, another one occurred. Just past the winning post, when the horses were coming in for the Stakes, a Maori with a boy on the horse behind him collided with Cly menus, ridden by W. Jenkins, who was thrown with fearful force to the grouud. He was carried insensible to the booth and promptly attended by IV. Barber. In half-an-hour he recovered consciousness, and was taken home. There is a great wound in his forehead, and he his sustained so severe a -hock that it is impossible to say what will be the ultimate effect. Latest advic . s are that he is very bad. The Maori c .eaped unhurt, and ran away. The boy behind .vas badly shaken. The meeting was a great success otherwise. Tho races were ridden hard for. There were good fields, and no protests were entered. Great credit is due to thtStewards aul all concerned. M'f-lwain'a collarbone is broken in two places. It was set by Dr. Berber on the course. He is suffering great pain, but hi-* ease is not considered serious.
