THE WELLINGTON REGATTA.
Considerable disgust wa3 felt iv Foxton yesterday, among -t rowing men, on receipt of the paper containing th. programme and prize list of the Welliugcon regatta. A> previously stated, there is to bo no outrigger race, and consequently the only rae■ii which tho Foxton Club's boat could jompcte is the fotir-oare I inrigged race of 3 mile-. It will scarcely be believed th** .he first prize for this race is the _miui-ict.ni ■mm of twelve pov-ndt len ...if Wh//.. ! And that for the clvef rowing contest at the rc/fitta held at Port Nicholson, the capital ot the Colony t But still further, this liberal Wellington rega'ta committee demand an entrauce fee of £1 Is, and deduct 5 per cent, from all money prizes, so that th<actual vame of the first prize is only £10 1 6s 6d, of which sum probably over a fialf would be obtained by entrauce fees. The only way to account for this meauuess on the part of the Wellingt n committee is by assuming they are "funky," and not desiring to have their men beaten on their own water (as ther have been already at Wanganui by the 'Foxton Club) desire to pi event another thrashing by keeping the raco in the hands of local boats. Unfortunately the I'oxton Club is not able to afford about double the value of the prize to enjoy the fuu of beating Wellingto.*men in Port Nioholson, and consequently the idea of sending a crew to the Empire City has been reluctantly abandoned. However, the Foxton committee offer sufficient to tempt the Wellington men to -dana watu, and if they can wreßt the laurels from our boys, tbey are welcome to the money. _________ _________
