THE SHILLING RATE.

MEETING AT OTAKI. (PROM OUB OWN CORRBBPO-«-B_IT). A public meeting of the ratepayers of the Horowhenua Riding was held at the Court house, Otaki, on Tuesday evening last, at 7.30 p.m. # There was a very large attendance, in apite of the bad weather which prevailed. Notice of the meeting, and its object, had been plaoed in Mr KebbelTs hands, also a request that he would attend, bat he failed to do so. It was hoped that he, beiqg member for the Riding in the County Council, would be able to meet the ratepayers at the meeting, and explain his rea> sons for promising to vote for the shilling rate, but he did not attend. Mr W. if. Simcox (Chairman, of the Otaki Highways Bpard) was voted to the chair, and in opening the meeting read a requisition sijrned by a number of ratepayer!.,' asking him to call a meeting j he also re£\d the notice issued convening the meet* ing. The following is ohe requisition to Mr Simcox: — Otaki, Maroh 18, 18.0. To W. H. Simcox, Eea , J.t*. . . Sir— We, the undersigned ratepayers in the Horowhenua Riding, respectfully request you to call a publio meeting for Tuesday evening next, to take into consideration the action of our representative in the County Couucil, in voting for the shilling rate, and we also request you to give notice to Mr Kebbell, in order that he may be present. J. Death G. Spackman W. Jenkins C. G. Hewson Thos. Bevan, jun* William Smith Wm. Ureenough I\l. Oarkeek F. Bright The following resolution wa« pro* posed by Mr Jas. Gear, seconded by \ Mr Thos. Bevan, junr , and carried unanimoutly : — Tbat in the opinion of this meeting our representative in the County Council has, in promising to vote for the shilling rate, aoted contrary to the wishes of a large majority of ratepayers in the Horowhenua Riding, and we now request him to reconsider his deoision, and at the next meeting of the County Council support the sixpenny rate.
