• A meeting of business people was held at Messrs Thynue, Linton & Co's office, Foxton, on Friday afternoon, at 2 o'clock, to consider the rates at present charged upon the Foxton whavf. Messrs Gower and Sanson were present, representing the country districts. Mr Thynne was voted to tho chair, and briefly explained the object of the meeting, which was to urge upon the Government the necessity of rearranging the charges upon the Foxton wharf, and classifying the goods. Mr Russell road tho following telegram he had just received from Mr Rotheram, mauager of the railway : — " Gazette i wharf rates was simply to place Foxton and East Town on the same footing. Amended tariff still under consideration." He remarked tho amended tariff had been nnder consideration a long time, and suggested a resolution reminding Mr Lawson of his promise. The Chairman said some time ago a very fair and equitable schedule was diawn up by Mr Rotherhara, and submitted to himself and other business people in the place for approval. He thought if that were gazettrd, ihey would have no injustice to coirpluiu of. In iv no charge was higher than 2s, and a very good classification was made. After some further discussion, the following resblution was proposed by Mr Whyle, seconded by Mr Liddell, and carried unanimously : — '' That in the opinion of this meeting, the ro-guzetting of the usual rates for wharfage to be charged on the Foxton wharf, after Commissioner Lawson's promise in Decembsr list to classify the goods and reduce the rates, is disappoint ing and unsatisfactory, and that the Government be requested to gazette the amended tariff, as drawn up by Mr Rotheram, and accepted by the business people of the town." It was resolved to forward a copj of the resolution to the Government. Tha meeting then terminated.
